Abstract The PowerPlex® ESI 17 Fast and ESX 17 Fast Systems represent faster cycling versions released by Promega® to follow the requirements of ENFSI and EDNAP groups’ for new STR genotyping systems in Europe. Allele frequencies and forensic parameters were estimated in a population sample of 120 unrelated healthy individuals living in Sicily (Western Sicilian population sample) using PowerPlex® ESI 17 Fast and PowerPlex® 17 Fast Systems. Full concordance of the results for both systems was observed. No significant deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was detected. Analysis of metacarpal V fractures of an interdisciplinary emergency room of an urban German hospital from a forensic viewpoint

Metacarpal V fractures, especially metacarpal neck fractures, are known to the forensic society as a ‘boxer’s fracture’ and are described as being mostly caused by punching an immovable or firm object with force with a closed fist. To our knowledge there is no larger study that examines these fractures under forensic considerations of epidemiology. Our study includes the analysis of metacarpal V fractures in an interdisciplinary, academic and university-affiliated emergency department of an urban hospital over a period of three years. Emergency data sheets were systematically analysed and X-rays evaluated. The results were compared with the existing literature.

Resumo Este estudo avaliou a capacidade discriminante de indicadores psicológicos e comportamentais frequentemente associados ao abuso sexual infantil. A amostra foi constituída por 79 crianças, de ambos os sexos, sendo 63,3% do sexo feminino (n = 50), com idades entre oito e 12 anos (M = 9,92; DP = 1,45). Os participantes foram distribuídos em três grupos: Abuso sexual (n = 34), Maus-tratos sem histórico de abuso sexual (n = 14) e Sintomas clínicos sem histórico de maus-tratos (n = 31). Water content of latent fingerprints - Dispelling the myth.

Abstract Changing procedures in the handling of rare and precious documents in museums and elsewhere, based on assumptions about constituents of latent fingerprints, have led the author to an examination of available data. These changes appear to have been triggered by one paper using general biological data regarding eccrine sweat production to infer that deposited fingerprints are mostly water. Searching the fingerprint literature has revealed a number of reference works similarly quoting figures for average water content of deposited fingerprints of 98% or more. Abstract Introduction: The Waterhouse–Friderichsen syndrome (WFS), also known as purpura fulminans, is a potentially lethal condition described as acute hemorrhagic necrosis of the adrenal glands. It is often caused by infection. Classically, Neisseriae meningitidis represents the main microorganism related to WFS, although, infrequently, also other infectious agents are reported as a possible etiologic agent.
